One of Alfred Hitchcock's most well-known and famous films, “The Birds” is about a small New England town that finds itself under attack by throngs of killer birds. It was the debut role for actress Tippi Hedren who was so traumatized by working with Hitchcock and on the film that she did not act for much longer after. Lock your bird cages, here are a few facts about the film.

- In the final scene where star Tippi Hedren is being assaulted by birds in the attack, Hitchcock actually had real birds thrown at her to make it as realistic as possible. The birds beaks were clamped shut but Hedren was still cut in the face by one of the birds.

- Except for the sounds of the birds flapping and the singing of the children in the school, there is no musical score in the film

- Hedrens rich socialite character drives an expensive Aston M artin DB/4 drop-head vehicle in the film

- Hitchcock wanted the final scene of the film to show the Golden Gate Bridge covered in birds but the shot proved too expensive

- A remake of The Birds has been in pre-production for several years, with actress Naomi Watts in talks to play the female lead

- Reports are that many of the birds in seagulls in the film were fed a diet of wheat and whiskey, which made them lethargic and easy to maneuver.

- The Birds was voted as the 7th scariest movie of all time by British Channel 5 and The Times paper in 2006

- The film is very loosely based on the novella The Birds by Daphne du Maurier

- A similar incident to the movie happened in August 1961 in Capitola, California where many awoke to find shearwater birds crashing into houses and the streets littered with dead birds. Many attributed the event to acid poisoning in the water.
