Get your cat to behave by following these simple cat training tips.
Many people believe that cat training is too difficult, and
often let their cat’s behavior problems continue based solely on this
fact. The idea that cats are too hard or
too stubborn to train, is just simply not true.
They may not be as easy or as willing to comply as dogs might be, but
training your cat is not an impossible task, in fact, it isn’t even very
difficult if you go about it in the right ways.
Now, when referring to cat training, I don’t mean teaching
your kitty to do tricks. There is nothing
wrong with teaching your cat tricks, but the focus of this article is on
training your cat to behave properly in your home.

Cats are very rewarding pets. They are intelligent, relatively easy to care for and can be trained if you know how to do it correctly. The first thing to teach a cat is its name. You will want it to come to you when you call its name, so repeat this exercise a few times.
Cats have needs, such as food, water, somewhere to strop their claws and toys or items to capture their interest. If you fail to provide an adequate scratching post, for example, a cat will use your couch or stereo speakers to strop its claws. Your pet cat is not doing this “to be naughty” but it does not have an alternative. If the cat begins to scratch the furniture, you can remove the animal and place it at the scratching post. You might need to do this a few times, but it will eventually realize what the scratching post is for.

Cats naturally look for a place that they can dig and bury their waste. Of course, you want the place they find to be the litter box! That said, there are several tips to follow when training cats to use the litter box and ensure that it is the only place they’ll want to go.
Make sure you place the litter box in a separate room from their eating or sleeping area. Cats are clean animals and typically associate their litter box with a dirty area. If the litter box is near the eating or sleeping area, they may naturally want to find a bathroom place that is farther away.

When it comes to our pets, it would be fantastic if we could train them how to do exactly what we want them to do. Training is only usually associated with dogs, but the fact is that all animals can be trained in some way and cats are certainly no exception.
The Basics of Cat Training
Cats can be trained to do a number of things. So, whether you want them to stop bringing mice back to your front door, to use their litter tray correctly, or even to just use the toilet instead, cats can be taught how to behave; you just need to know the basics.
Training a cat is obviously very different to training a dog. With a dog you teach them things such as ‘stay’, ‘fetch’, and ‘heel’. However, with a cat you are generally just training them to change their behavior slightly. You do not want them to do anything spectacular (though some trainers have been able to teach their cats to perform); you mainly just want to teach them how to behave in a more appropriate manner.

Cat behavior training is most effective when you keep three things in mind. First, cats respond best when you offer them rewards. Second, cats generally do not respond well to punishment. Third, cats like routine not change. If you remember these three things, you will have much greater success with your cat behavior training!
First off, good cat behavior must be rewarded. How do you do this? By making sure that good behaviors are fun and pleasurable for your cat.
For example, if you want your cat to cuddle more often, use a brush to groom her when she comes close to you. Most cats enjoy brushing over petting because if offers a deeper, more thorough massage to their skin. As you brush them, pet them and offer praise. In no time, you will find your cat wanting to be more affectionate.

For most cat owners, expecting to find dead animals on their front step is all part of cat ownership. However, for many this can be extremely upsetting and they could find that their cat is bringing back dead animals more frequently than is acceptable. Now while you do unfortunately have to expect this behavior, it is sometimes possible to limit the amount of animals that your cat does actually bring home.
Understanding Your Cats Instinct
Before you can successfully stop your cat from acting a certain way, you need to first understand why they act in that way in the first place. Now with killing things, it is in a cat’s instinct to hunt, chase and kill smaller animals. They cannot control it and it is not a behavior that can be controlled. So in that sense, it is impossible for you to teach a cat not to hunt.
