Selecting the best food for your new puppy may seem a daunting task. Every puppy starts off with the best food possible, mother's milk. This means that your new puppy comes to you with the best dietary system they will have in their entire life. As the owner of a new puppy you will want to make sure you support that system. This provides a general guide for identifying the best foods for your new puppy.
Things to stay away from would be the semi-moist and the canned dog foods. Most often these include significant amounts of salt, sugar and often water, while providing very little health benefits. While providing little to your puppy to grow from, the softer food may also lead to gum disease and other dental concerns. Once weaned a new puppy should be transitioned onto a dried kibble. The kibble should be at least 28% protein, to help the puppy grow strong and healthy. A puppy kibble is designed to help the dental health of puppies as well. So with your new puppy you are looking forward to selecting a puppy kibble where the top three ingredients include a protein. This will provide the appropriate portions and be easily identified.

There are about a bazillion brands of dog foods on the market. Some are really cheap, some are really expensive. Some are all natural, some are organic. What sets them apart? What makes one better than another? In short, what are the best dog foods? The answer might surprise you.
The best food you can feed your dog is probably in your kitchen right now. Do you have any chicken in the refrigerator? How about beef or some pork? Do you have any oats in the pantry? Perhaps you have a package of peas and carrots in the freezer. If so, you have the makings of the best food you could possibly feed your pet. With a few exceptions, the food you feed your family is the food you can feed your dog, and it will be far better than any commercial brand. Why is that?

Why would you want to take the time and effort to make your dogs food? You have to shop for the ingredients and then you have to cook the food, and God knows, you already have enough to do with the job, the kid and their activities, and keeping the house together. Why not just buy a commercial food? There are plenty of commercial healthy dog foods, arent there? Maybe yes and maybe no.
Have you ever read the ingredients in a can of dog food? Do you know what all of the ingredients are? For example, do you know what BHA and BHT are, what meat by-products are, what fish meal is? If youre going to give food containing these ingredients to a member of your family " and your dog is a member of your family " you really should know what they are.

What, exactly, does natural mean? More importantly, what does natural mean when you see it on a can or a bag of dog food? You want the best of everything for your dog, including his food, but are foods that are labeled as natural dog foods any better than any other not labeled natural?
The basic definition of natural is, in accordance with nature. As it pertains to commodities – and dog food is a commodity – the definition is, being unprocessed or manufactured using only simple or minimal processes. The commercial food you buy your dog may contain natural ingredients, but are they good for your dog? Are they nutritious? The definition doesnt say anything about being healthy or good for you – or your dog.

Look at the can of dog food you have been feeding your dog. Dont just look at the label. Super Gourmet Beef Delight doesnt tell you what your dog is actually eating. Read the ingredients. Do you know what each ingredient is? What it really is? Not all ingredients in a can of food are necessarily good for your dog. Here are three ingredients you should steer clear of.
Corn (in any form)
You will see it listed as corn gluten, corn gluten meal, corn cellulose, or simply corn. Dogs are carnivores but they can eat and digest vegetable matter. However, corn is very difficult for them to digest because they dont have enough of the proper enzymes. Too much corn can lead to digestive issues. The corn gluten, gluten meal, and cellulose are used primarily as binders and have very little nutritional value.

There are all sorts of dog food ratings and comparison charts and reviews you can get comparing one commercial brand to another, analyzing crude protein content, calorie values, ingredient sources, and so on. There are two things that are never mentioned, however: ingredient definitions and comparisons to home made dog foods. Why not?
One obvious answer is that it is difficult, if not impossible, to compare a commercial brand to “home made” because of the broad range of possibilities for home made dog foods; there is no one standard home made dog food recipe. And there is some truth in this. Another not so obvious answer is that a lot of these reviews are commissioned by the manufacturers themselves and they aren't going to put something in a review or comparison that makes them look bad.

Before commercially processed
pet food,
pet owners fed their pets table scraps and leftovers. Some bought meat scraps from the butcher. It was also more common for pets to roam outside and supplement their meals with whatever they could catch.
In 1860, James Spratt produced the first commercial pet food for dogs, which was called a dog cake. In the 1950s, his company became part of a major food manufacture. Dog biscuits came along in 1907 and were originally intended to be a meal, not just a treat. In the 1920s, canned food was produced and became popular. During World War 2, tin used for the cans became important for manufacturing things needed for the war effort. Less canned pet food was produced and dry food, or kibble, became more popular. The first kibble was Dog Chow and Cat Chow.
