Even though your dog may be in perfect health, he still needs an annual veterinary exam. It is the key to giving your pet a long, healthy life. The annual exam involves much more than just a routine check-up. Early warning signs of serious problems are often discovered during these exams. When detected early, many of these problems can be prevented or delayed.
Most vets do what is called a “Nose to Tail” exam. They begin by examining your dog's nose, and continue examining all the way to the tail.
Nose
Your dog's nose is checked for nasal discharge which can indicate a cold or Rhinitis; a symptom of a number of possible diseases including respiratory infection and Canine Distemper.

Surprisingly, many dog owners are not that knowledgeable on dental care for their companions. Worse still, some don't tend to their teeth until there is a visible problem, or very bad odor coming from the mutt's mouth! However, it would be time to wise up if you are one of those owners who don't have much of a clue when it comes to dental care. Dental diseases are unpleasant for dogs and their owners who have to see them in discomfort or pain. If dental problems are left to escalate then teeth will drop out and your pooch's mouth will smell like a small animal died in there.

Your new, little puppy scampers playfully at your feet. He romps around in the grass giving you insurmountable joy. He is becoming an important part in your family's life. To keep your puppy happy, healthy and disease-free you will need to give him the appropriate veterinarian health care.
When a puppy is first born he is protected by his mom's antibodies from her blood and initial milk supply, known as colostrum. The first stage of your puppy's maternal antibody protection is approximately 2 days. This window of protection will only include those viruses that the mother is protected against and works according to the level of antibodies in the pup's bloodstream. There may still be a risk for infection if levels are not strong enough at that particular time. There is no rhyme or reason as to how high or low the levels may be even in different puppies of the same litter.

Before commercially processed
pet food,
pet owners fed their pets table scraps and leftovers. Some bought meat scraps from the butcher. It was also more common for pets to roam outside and supplement their meals with whatever they could catch.
In 1860, James Spratt produced the first commercial pet food for dogs, which was called a dog cake. In the 1950s, his company became part of a major food manufacture. Dog biscuits came along in 1907 and were originally intended to be a meal, not just a treat. In the 1920s, canned food was produced and became popular. During World War 2, tin used for the cans became important for manufacturing things needed for the war effort. Less canned pet food was produced and dry food, or kibble, became more popular. The first kibble was Dog Chow and Cat Chow.

If you have recently gotten a new dog or are considering to own, there are several aspects in relation to caring for a pet’s health that should be considered. Dogs need to be fed the right kind of food; they need exercise; they need vaccines and preventative treatments; they need to be groomed; and they need to have proper dental care. Here is a short overview of the most important health aspects to consider when owning a pet:
First of all, a healthy diet goes a long way! If your pet is being fed table scraps or dry food that is primarily composed of vegetable and grain, you may want to reconsider Fido’s diet. If your dog is often being fed “people” food from the dinner table, it can easily cause obesity. Dogs metabolisms and organs do not function just like humans do, dogs require special diets and food types to thrive…human food does not simply cut it. Also, dogs thrive on diets that consist of high protein and low vegetable and grain levels. Dogs are classified omnivores; that means they thrive on meat and vegetable diets. However, recent research strongly supports the theory that dog foods that are high in protein are more beneficial to pets. Talk to your local vet and they will help you find the best food choice for your dog.

Depending on the type of animal you own, pet eye care could either be an everyday maintenance issue or a complete non-issue unless illness strikes. Even when an eye illness does occur, the consequences are rarely serious unless the illness goes untreated. If you’ve got questions about eye care for your pets, hopefully the following will give you some answers.
We’ll start with the smallest first-fish, and the common misconception that fish are unlikely to suffer from eye problems. In fact, eye problems are rather common in fish, and can be difficult to treat, given we can’t lay a fish on the exam table and have a vet take a look! A very common cause of fish eye problems is injury caused by running into the sharp edges of tank décor. In the instances of eye injury and resulting infection, the fish’s eye may appear cloudy or distended. The best thing you can do for a fish with an injured eye is quarantine it in a smaller tank to keep the other fish from picking at it while it heals. An injured fish is free game to other fish in the tank, and the stress of being chased and nipped at will only prolong your injured fish’s healing process. To prevent or heal infection, special aquarium antibiotics can be added to the water of your fish’s recuperation tank.
