Are Cats and Dogs Really Enemies

It's one of those truisms that we tend to take for granted: cats and dogs fight like, well, cats and dogs. Everybody knows that cats and dogs don't get along. Don't they? Isn't it true? Well, maybe not. New research is casting doubt on this age-old stereotype about two of our best friends.

According to researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel, it's perfectly possible for cats and dogs to get along in the same home. Researchers interviewed some 200 people who owned both cats and dogs for their study. Surprisingly, they found that two-thirds of the respondents in the study reported that their cats and dogs got along fine and were friends.

One-fourth of the respondents reported that their pets were indifferent to each other. And, in 10 percent of the homes, the cats and dogs actively disliked each other. Aggression and fighting were reported in these homes.

Does My Kitty Need a Pet Carrier?

There are ways of getting around this, but sooner or later you will probably find that you need to purchase a pet carrier so you may as well put it on your initial kitty expenditure list.

That way, when you go to pick up your kitten, you’ll know that you can transport it comfortably home without the kitten being hurt or causing an accident by jumping off your lap or out of your arms and distracting the person driving you home ? you could even drive yourself if your kitty’s locked up safe and sound in a carrier!

There are many different pet carriers on the market.  Choose one that fits your preference but which has enough room for a fully grown cat to be able to stand up and turn around in.  Also choose a pet carrier that allows air to circulate on all four sides, and if possible has a place to add a water dish.  You may not immediately have a need for the water dish but if you purchase a pet carrier that has this feature, you’ll be ready should a need arise during your cat’s lifetime.

Training Cats To Use The Litter Box

Cats naturally look for a place that they can dig and bury their waste. Of course, you want the place they find to be the litter box! That said, there are several tips to follow when training cats to use the litter box and ensure that it is the only place they’ll want to go.

Make sure you place the litter box in a separate room from their eating or sleeping area. Cats are clean animals and typically associate their litter box with a dirty area. If the litter box is near the eating or sleeping area, they may naturally want to find a bathroom place that is farther away.

Make sure you keep the box in a place that is out of the way. Bathrooms and closets are often private spots that cats will naturally want to use.

Cat Breeds For Cat Lovers

Some cat breeds are low maintenance, while others require frequent brushing. Cat breeds are not as different from each other as different dog breeds but there are still some mighty different types of cats out there. Some cat breeds are people-pets and there are other cat’s breeds that prefer to be aloof and independent. Some cat breeds are more prone to spells of silence, but sometimes individual cats of the more vocal breeds are also not very talkative.

Cats Are Unique

Cats have amazing abilities to hear, see and smell. Cats will also turn their ears back when they are playing or to listen to a sound coming from behind them. Felines will also use contact to communicate urgency, from gentle reminders of feeding time to a demanding insistent rub. Cats involved in a conflict may extend their fully bristled tail straight into the air and turn their body sideways to appear larger.

Adopting A Kitten For The Family?

Most people have owned cats all their lives, with childhood memories of various cats and their character, and they usually feel that home is not complete without a resident furry ‘frfiend’. To some others, owning a cat can be a pleasure discovered much later in life. It is quite well known that we do not really ‘adopt’ a cat, but are ‘adopted’ by them, as have been demonstrated so many times in my own family and as well as neigbours of ours when they ended up having a couple of strays wondering into their lives, and subsequently becoming part of their families.

What Causes Ear Problems In Cats?

If your cat’s ears are bothering her, there can be many reasons. Don’t ignore her if she’s scratching her ears more often than normal, or if she shakes her head a lot. She may have ear mites, which can lead to more serious conditions.

What are ear mites? They’re small parasites that live in your furry friend’s ears. Their bites cause intense itching, which can just about drive her (and you) crazy. If you suspect your kitty has mites, look in her ears. If you see dark brown waxy stuff in there that looks like coffee grounds, your buddy probably has them.

Felines are extremely prone to ear mites. Kittens especially are bothered by them, and they usually catch them from their mothers. Mites move around easily and spread very quickly from one animal to another in a household. So if you have more than one kitty or puppy, be sure to treat all your furry friends at the same time so they don’t keep passing them back and forth.

Tips On Cat Behavior Training

Cat behavior training is most effective when you keep three things in mind. First, cats respond best when you offer them rewards. Second, cats generally do not respond well to punishment. Third, cats like routine not change. If you remember these three things, you will have much greater success with your cat behavior training!

First off, good cat behavior must be rewarded. How do you do this? By making sure that good behaviors are fun and pleasurable for your cat.

For example, if you want your cat to cuddle more often, use a brush to groom her when she comes close to you. Most cats enjoy brushing over petting because if offers a deeper, more thorough massage to their skin. As you brush them, pet them and offer praise. In no time, you will find your cat wanting to be more affectionate.
